Gong Li excluded from China film body after citizenship switch

Actress Gong Li was excluded from the delegate list of the eighth national conference of the China Film Association (CFA), a CFA spokesman said on Monday.

"According to the CFA charter, members must be Chinese citizens," Kang Jianmin, the CFA vice chairman, said.

Gong, the 43-year-old star of "Farewell My Concubine" and "Memoirs of a Geisha," was naturalized in Singapore in early November.

Gong was a member of the ninth and tenth national committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

However, Gong was not on the list for the 11th session of the CPPCC, held early this year. She will not be a member again, since CPPCC members are customarily Chinese citizens.

The just-concluded CFA conference granted memberships to film makers and actors from Hong Kong and Macao for the first time. Jackie Chan was elected vice chairman of the CFA.

Hugh Jackman's demanding role

Actor Hugh Jackman waves during a photocall to promote his lastest film "Australia" in Madrid December 3, 2008.

Hugh Jackman agreed to play a cowboy in 'Australia' without knowing how to ride a horse.

The handsome actor admits he only has minimal riding experience and worried he would fall short as The Drover - an Australian version of a cowboy - in his latest film.
He said: "Every actor you've ever met says he knows how to ride a horse so when they asked me if I could, I said, 'Yeah, I can ride' but I had really only done a little bit before."

When he received the script, Hugh began to realise he had underestimated how demanding the role would be.

Hugh, 40, added: "This is how they describe my character's horsemanship, 'The Drover, astride his horse like a knight in shining armour corralling 100 wild horses, by himself.' That freaked me out.

"Then it says, 'The Drover rides along on the saddle pursuing a bull. He leaps down and throws the massive beast on to its side. The Drover takes out a bush knife, grabs the bull by the b***s and slices them!' "

In preparation for playing The Drover, Hugh embarked upon a gruelling horse training regime, riding every day for a year before shooting began on the film.

'Australia' opens in European cinemas this month.

"Marley and Me" tops Christmas weekend box office in North America

Cast members Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson pose at the premiere of the movie "Marley & Me" at the Mann Village theatre in Westwood, California December 11, 2008. The movie opens in the U.S. on December 25.

Hollywood is enjoying a happy ending for 2008 as a slew of movies featuring A-list stars helped lure economically frustrated audiences into theaters during the Christmas holiday weekend.

"Marley and Me," a dog tale comedy from 20th Century Fox and starring Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson, rocketed to the top of the box office in U.S. and Canadian theaters, taking in 51.7 million dollars over the four-day weekend, according to preliminary figures released Sunday.

The film also had the biggest Christmas Day opening in Hollywood's history with estimated ticket sales of 14.75 million dollars, surpassing the 10.22 million dollars grossed by the previous record holder "Ali" on Christmas day in 2001, said box office tracking firm Media By Numbers.

Paramount's "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," a big-screen adaptation of the short story by American writer F. Scott Fitzgerald, was in second place with an estimated 39 million dollars over the same period. Brad Pitt and Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett appear in the film that tracks the fantasy life of a man born old and dying as a baby.

Disney's family comedy "Bedtime Stories," in which Adam Sandler plays a man whose bedtime stories for his nephew and niece come true in real life, ranked in No. 3 with 38.6 million dollars. But the film edged ahead of "Benjamin Button" over the three-day weekend if Christmas Day sales are removed from the totals.

Tom Cruise's World War II thriller "Valkyrie" was in the fourth spot with an unexpected 30 million dollars over the Christmas weekend, followed by last week's box office leader, the Jim Carrey comedy "Yes Man," with 22.4 million dollars.

Amid a deepening economic recession, Hollywood celebrated the Christmas holiday with a record of five new movies in wide release.

The top-selling 12 movies took in 182.5 million dollars this weekend, up 8 percent from the same weekend last year, while Hollywood's total domestic box office revenues for the year are expected to almost keep at par with the all-time record of 9.7 billion dollars in 2007.

'Red Cliff II' to premiere earlier than planned

The sequel to "Red Cliff", a popular Chinese war epic, will debut on Jan. 7, 15 days ahead of schedule.

The state-owned China Film Group Corp. (CFGC), distributor of the film, made the decision after discussion with cinema managers in six cities including Beijing and Shanghai, the Beijing News reported on Friday.

The first installment of the two-part series, adapted from the Chinese classic novel, "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", debuted in Asia on July 10.

It made about 320 million yuan (US$46.85 million) within a month, the paper said.

"I am confident that the second episode will beat the first one at the box office," said Weng Li, spokesman of the CFGC.

Directed by John Woo, the cast features Tony Leung, Takeshi Kaneshiro and Zhang Fengyi.

"Red Cliff" has an investment of 80 million U.S. dollars.

The story revolves around the Battle of Red Cliffs in 208 AD. It involved a famous military underdog victory as the 50,000-strong allied forces of southern warlords Liu Bei and Sun Quan defeated 800,000 troops of the northern warlord Cao Cao.

The largest scenes involved 2,000 actors and crew, along with a wide range of special effects.

The period from December to early February, known as prime pre-Lunar New Year film season, is usually the busiest time of the year at China's box office. It's when many domestic films debut.
Advancing the screening date is a common practice during the season. "If You Are the One", a work of famed director Feng Xiaogang, debuted on Dec. 18, four days earlier than scheduled.
Besides "Red Cliff", another 11 movies are set to premiere next month.

Stars like Andy Lau, Jay Chou, Jet Li, Li Youbin as well as late director Xie Jin were in the top 20. Mainland pop singer Zang Tianshuo, who was arrested for allegedly helming a criminal gang this November, and Hong Kong entertainer Edison Chen, who was involved in a nude photo scandal, finished in second last and last place respectively in the list of about 700 celebrities.

Veteran actress Deng Jie fell to the third-last position in the ranking. Her public standing was greatly jeopardized by her connection to the tainted milk scandal in the past few months.

The survey also ranked CCTV presenter Bai Yansong as number one on the hosts' list. Entertainment program hostess Li Xiang came in last.

Budding actor Wang Baoqiang, who rose to fame through the hit TV sitcom, Soldiers Sortie, was honored as the best new actor.

The survey, conducted by the Lian Xin Power Survey company, focused on five categories: professional ethic, performance, public welfare activity, social influence and commercial value.

The selection was carried out in a fair, scientific way. While the performance of celebrities was what was mainly taken into consideration, negative reports took its toll on some big names.

The activity is believed to encourage Chinese celebrities to fulfill their social responsibilities.

Warner Bros. sues CBS over "Two and a Half Men"

Charlie Sheen (R), Jon Cryer (L) and Angus T. Jones pose with their award for favorite TV comedy for 'Two and a Half Men' at the 33rd annual People's Choice Awards in Los Angeles, California January 9, 2007.

Warner Bros studio sued broadcaster CBS Corp over top-rated television sitcom "Two and a Half Men," claiming the TV network owes the studio $49 million in production costs and fees because the show has become such a big hit.

Warner Bros' lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Tuesday, states that if the show it produces for CBS was renewed for seasons five and six, CBS was obligated to share more revenue and allow Warner to recoup costs from seasons one through four.

"CBS has reaped the benefits of the tremendous success of 'Two and a Half Men' but wants to deny Warner Bros the right to its agreed-upon share. It should not be permitted to do so," the lawsuit said.

A CBS had no immediate comment.

Warner Bros, owned by Time Warner Inc, said in the lawsuit that it is customary in the TV industry for a studio to reap the additional revenue it is seeking from a show that proves successful.

The studio said producing an episode of "Two and a Half Men" cost $1.2 million in its first season, and that the network knew the license fee of $750,000 per episode it was paying was insufficient to cover costs. The studio said the license fee was subject to "modest" increases after that.

Warner Bros also is seeking "premium" payments above the license fees for seasons five and six because the show has been the top rated TV sitcom in recent years and it reaches many viewers in the coveted 18- to 49-year-old age range.

The lawsuit said the show generates hundreds of millions of dollars for the network.

Actor Charlie Sheen, who plays a womanizing bachelor living with his brother (Jon Cryer) and his brother's son, topped the list of high-paid TV stars at nearly $20 million a year, TV Guide magazine has reported.

Katie Holmes chooses Broadway over Tom Cruise

Katie Holmes had the difficulty of making the choice to either stay in New York and finish her last performance of her Broadway show, "All My Sons" or attend the Golden Globes with husband Tom Cruise in Los Angeles.

Tom is nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role in "Tropic Thunder" and the Golden Globes are handed out on January 11, 2009.

Katie's press rep, Ina Treciokas, says definitively that Katie has decided to stay in New York to do her last show. She states that the cast of "All My Sons" has been like a family and they want to end the show together.

Holmes has been totally devoted to the show. She hasn't missed a single performance and has remained devoted to the play even though she has the smallest of the four lead parts.

So who will Tom bring to the globes? Speculation is that his mother, Mary or daughter, Isabella, will be his date for the evening.

Eartha Kitt, sultry singer and dancer, dies at 81

Eartha Kitt, a sensual singer, dancer and actress who rose from modest rural roots to captivate international audiences with her sultry voice and style, died Thursday at the age of 81.

Andrew Freedman, a long-time friend and publicist, said Kitt died of colon cancer for which she was recently treated at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York.

Singler Eartha Kitt arrives for a taping of the second annual TV Land Awards in Hollywood in this file photo from March 7, 2004.Eartha Kitt, a sensual singer, dancer and actress who rose from modest rural roots to captivate international audiences with her sultry voice and style, died Thursday at the age of 81.
The cancer was detected about two years ago and treated but recurred after a period of remission.

"She came back strongly. She had been performing until two months ago," Freedman told Reuters by telephone from Los Angles. "We had dates booked through 2009."

Slinky and cat-like, Kitt described herself as a "sex kitten" and used her seductive purr to charm audiences across the world.

"She loved cabaret performances," Freedman said. "If there was ever an opportunity to do a small intimate venue with about 150 people, that was always her preference."

Kitt picked up a string of awards during her long career, winning two Emmys and being nominated for a third, as well as a Grammy. She also had two Tony nominations.

Kitt's hit songs included "C'est Si Bon," "Let's Do It" and "Just an Old Fashioned Girl." She also was widely associated with Christmas because of her hit "Santa Baby." The song went gold this year and she received the gold record before she died, Freedman said.

Blackballed in America for speaking out against the Vietnam War in the 1960s, Kitt began performing in Europe and rose to fame before returning to her native land to great acclaim.

"She was never one to look back on her life," Freedman said. "She was a true individual who believed that if you had a true belief in yourself, your talent was authentic."

"My greatest challenge was to be able to survive in the business and to be able to survive according to what I was doing. Not what other people were doing," Kitt told Reuters in a 2005 television interview at the Newport, Rhode Island jazz festival.

"I just stuck to my own guns and I think that was one of the way's I have survived. I didn't follow the herd. I stuck to my own path," she said. "The audience is not supposed to know that I'm scared, the shyest person in the world."

Born Eartha Mae Kitt on a cotton plantation in South Carolina in 1927, she spoke in many interviews of her tough childhood in the impoverished South before she was sent to live with an aunt in New York City.

Kitt got her start as a member of the Katherine Dunham Company and made her film debut in "Casbah" in 1948. On television she was perhaps best known for her role as the sexy Catwoman in the 1960s TV series "Batman."

"I love my Mom, Aliana, Cody, Michael, and my Nana Sullivan!! I will be missing them this Christmas as it is the first one I am spending away from home. I am spending it with Samantha in Los Angeles."

Q: Posted by Rick: Dear Mr. Sandler - would you please write a song about why kids do not have to eat all vegetables and bad tasting stuff on there plates and put it in a movie? This would help me a lot. Thank you.

Q: Posted by Isabella: Do you want to go to Dairy Queen and get some strawberry ice cream? Strawberry is my favorite.

A: Thanks a lot Isabella. I'll meet you there at seven. I'll be the guy wearing a sugar cone on my head.

Q: Posted by Derek: Dear Adam Sandler, what's the one (Hanukkah) present you wanted more than anything, but never got? Did you get it when you grew up and got your own money, or did you lose interest?

A: I always wanted Rock-em Sock-em Robots and last year I finally saved up enough to get it.

Q: Posted by Logan: Do you have a porch light?

A: I have two. Do you have a problem with that?

Q: Posted by Jack: Adam, What do you do right before bedtime?

A: Mostly I try to get all the donut crumbs out of my bed.

Q: Posted by Marco: If you were asked to star in one of Christopher Nolan's Batman films, which character would you like to be? Have a good day! And keep up the good work. Come to Texas and do a film here!

The 'Smile' singer - who previously revealed she tried ecstasy at the age of 14 - believes young people should look up to family members rather than celebrities they have never met.

Lily said: "I think role models should be aunts and uncles, mothers and sisters and brothers. Why would you want to put someone on a pedestal that you know nothing about?"

However, the 23-year-old has also revealed she is toning down her hell-raising lifestyle and refuses to be influenced by her wild friends.

She added: "My mates are in a totally different place. I've grown up so much and they are still all into going out dancing and taking drugs.

"I hang out with much older people. I go for dinners at posh places and talk about art."

The 23-year-old beauty - who recently revealed she will quit her music career when she finds the right man - also says she dreams of starting a family.

She said: "I don't think I want to be doing this at the same times as that. I certainly wouldn't want to mix the two. But I do enjoy it."

Amy Winehouse's Caribbean move

Amy Winehouse wants to move to the Caribbean.

The 'Rehab' singer - who is currently enjoying a festive break in St. Lucia - prefers spending time in the sun to her London lifestyle and is considering relocating to the idyllic island.

She said: "I could easily live here, the people are amazing and the local music scene is inspiring."
The 25-year-old singer loves St. Lucia so much she is even hoping to record her next album there.

A friend told Britain's Daily Star newspaper: "Amy has been soaking up the local culture. She has attended a music festival and been seeking out bands in the village.

"She's been talking about recording the album in St. Lucia. She's actually glowing."

The troubled star has apparently found a new lease of life while holidaying on the island and has even started eating healthily and exercising in the gym with a personal trainer.

A source said: "She's very enthusiastic about her sessions and bounds in to work out on the bikes, weights and Power Plate."

Kate Hudson will spend Christmas trying to keep her son out of trouble on the ski slopes. The 29-year-old actress will spend the festive period skiing with four-year-old Ryder - her child with ex-husband, Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson - in the mountains of Colorado.
She said: "Every year we go to Colorado because we grew up there and we ski." Ryder learned to ski last Christmas, mastering the slopes so quickly he was tackling advanced runs by the time Kate came to check on him.

She recalled: "I started panicking a little bit because I couldn't see him anywhere, and the instructor came over and said, 'Oh, actually, he's up on the mountain.' I'm standing there in my skis and I'm looking up and all of a sudden I see this little kid in camouflage and I'm like, 'No!' He is just zooming down the mountain and I started to cry?I grew up skiing, and then you see your kids ski and there's a freedom in it, it's beautiful."

Angelina Jolie's toe wax

Actress Angelina Jolie attends the premiere of the movie "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" at the Mann's Village theatre in Westwood, California December 8, 2008. The movie opens in the U.S. on December 25.

Angelina Jolie gets her toes waxed. The 'Changeling' actress and her partner Brad Pitt are so determined to keep their good looks they have regular home visits from beauty therapists, during which Angelina reportedly gets rid of her unwanted body hair.
A source told America's Star magazine: "They call it their 'Me Day'. Angelina's assistant makes all the arrangements. She likes massages, pedicures and waxing - and even gets her toes waxed.

Angelina's very particular about not having any stray hairs." As Brad is not partial to waxing, he usually opts for facials or asks to have his highlights re-touched. The source added: "Brad is obsessed with his skin looking flawless and pays extra for detoxifying elixir peels and anti-ageing organic serum cleanses."

Angelina is not always so obsessive about her appearance - she has previously admitted she sometimes wears urine-soaked dresses on the red carpet. The actress, who raises six children with Brad, said: "The only time fame and family life ever collides is if, you know, we're trying to get ready for some event where we have to walk a carpet and somebody gets peed on, and figures, 'Oh well, I guess we'll be wearing that this evening.' "

Pete Wentz's mammary milkshake

Pete Wentz says Ashlee Simpson's breast milk tastes "soury and weird".

The Fall Out Boy rocker is not a fan of his wife's milk, but insists his newborn son Bronx Mowgli enjoys it.
He said: "The baby loves it, it's the only thing he's had a chance to have." The star has also revealed his plans to become a father again and hopes to have a sizeable brood.

He said: "I want to have six now. I mean not six specifically, but I want more... I can't imagine that we're stopping, you know what I'm saying? "This is like a Journey song, it's like the chorus is just going to keep coming."

Pete, 29, has also confessed he thought he was going into cardiac arrest when Ashlee was having the baby, but soon felt better when he saw his son.

He added to US radio station Sirius: "I had a scared moment right before she went into labour - I thought I was having a heart attack for real, like my heart started doing like a weird thing.

"But, the first time I held him... I just knew everything was perfect. Like everything was good - it was like Lego, you know what I'm saying? Like it all fit together."

Jessica Simpson's baby work

Jessica Simpson is "actively trying" for a baby.

The singer-and-actress is reportedly desperate to start a family with her American football star boyfriend Tony Romo after her younger sister Ashlee gave birth to her first child, son Bronx Mowgli, last month.
A source told gossip blogger Perez Hilton: "I wouldn't be surprised if Jessica makes an announcement that she's pregnant very, very soon."

Meanwhile, the 'Come On Over' singer has revealed that the festive period has made her become more domesticated.

She said: "My personality is now more stay-at-home - right now I'm doing the Christmas tree and everything. I'm in Dallas and its fun, Tony hasn't had Christmas in seven years because they have football every Christmas and he can't go home. So I'm bringing Christmas to him this year.

"Believe it or not, I like to bake pies. Tony's favourite is pumpkin pie and I haven't mastered that yet. Maybe I'm more of a baker - I like to make cakes, more fattening."

Jessica recently spoke of her delight at becoming an aunt following the birth of Bronx, Ashlee's son with husband Pete Wentz.

She said: "Bronx is beyond precious. I'm over the moon with joy. Life is a beautiful miracle. Ashlee and Pete are healthy, happy, and enjoying every moment."

Ledger's death voted top 2008 entertainment story

Heath Ledger's death was voted 2008's top entertainment story by U.S. newspaper and broadcast editors surveyed by The Associated Press.

The top 10:

1. HEATH LEDGER DIES: When the Australian actor was found dead Jan. 22 at 28, shock and confusion over the circumstances of his death followed. The autopsy concluded Ledger's death was accidental, the result of a toxic combination of prescription drugs. His legacy continued, though, in a roundly acclaimed performance as the Joker in the year's biggest box office hit "The Dark Knight."

Actor Heath Ledger is pictured in a scene from "Brokeback Mountain" in this undated publicity photograph.

2. WRITERS STRIKE ENDS: The Writers Guild of America took to the picket lines Nov. 5 of last year. The strike played havoc on the industry, from award shows to network TV schedules, and didn't conclude until Feb. 12. When an agreement was finally reached, the Academy Awards were saved and scripted television slowly returned to the airwaves.

3. BOFFO BOX OFFICE FOR "DARK KNIGHT": As the release of Christopher Nolan's second Batman installment "The Dark Knight" neared, anticipation over Ledger's performance mounted. The film went on to gross $528 million domestically, second all-time only to "Titanic." Unlike most blockbusters, it also appeared on many critics' top 10 lists.

4. POLITICAL COMEDY SHINES: The long campaign was highlighted by late-night hosts (David Letterman chastising John McCain for missing his scheduled guest appearance), satire veterans (Tina Fey's Sarah Palin impression on "Saturday Night Live") and new media sensations ("Obama Girl"). "SNL," "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report" all charted their best ratings.

5. BRITNEY SPEARS' DOWNWARD SPIRAL: Though by year's end Spears had rebounded with a new album and successful TV appearances, her 2008 started at a low point. After a custody dispute with Kevin Federline, Spears was hospitalized and held for psychiatric evaluation. The chaos eventually subsided and in November she released the aptly titled album "Circus."

6. PAUL NEWMAN DIES: Newman, one of the most beloved actors of the 20th century, died Sept. 26 at 83 after a fight with lung cancer at his longtime home in Westport, Conn. In the days after, tributes were paid to the charismatic actor in his various worlds: theater, movies, auto racing and philanthropy.

7. TV NETWORKS EMBRACE THE WEB: Online video turned pro in 2008. Networks increasingly embraced the Web, making many of their most popular shows available to stream online. News Corp. and NBC Universal banded together to created Hulu.com, while ABC and CBS continued to beef up their sites.

8. GEORGE CARLIN DIES: The truth-telling comedian — widely considered one of the greatest ever — died June 22 at 71. "He was more than just a comic," said Paul Rodriguez. "His routines became part of the American lexicon."

9. TIM RUSSERT DIES: Reaction to the unexpected June 13 death of Tim Russert at 58 was widespread and felt throughout Washington by Republicans and Democrats. Tom Brokaw delivered the news live on NBC, and would later temporarily take Russert's spot on "Meet the Press." David Gregory recently became the full-time moderator for the show, the longest-running on TV.

10. JENNIFER HUDSON'S FAMILY TRAGEDY: Days after the release of her film "The Secret Life of Bees," tragedy befell the family of the "American Idol" finalist. Her mother, brother and nephew were killed in a shooting at their Chicago home. Police have charged William Balfour, the estranged husband of Hudson's sister Julia, with the murders.

Dustin Hoffman finds "Last Chance" for love

At 71, Dustin Hoffman says he will never retire from acting, but he may have to look far beyond the Hollywood that made him famous to find the roles he relishes as he ages.

His latest film, "Last Chance Harvey," is a small ode to finding love late in life, a theme that should resound with the fastest-growing movie-going audience -- viewers over 40. It opens in U.S. theaters on Christmas Day.

Cast member Dustin Hoffman poses during the DVD release of "Kung Fu Panda" at the Grauman's Chinese theatre in Hollywood, California Nov. 9, 2008. At 71, Dustin Hoffman says he will never retire from acting, but he may have to look far beyond the Hollywood that made him famous to find the roles he relishes as he ages.

Hoffman, who plays down-on-his-luck Harvey opposite Emma Thompson's Kate, would like to make more films for older fans, just as he reveled in representing a younger generation as Benjamin Braddock in "The Graduate" 40 years ago.

But the two-time Oscar winner and seven-time nominee doesn't think the Hollywood studios -- bent on big films that blanket theaters -- are capable of taking on senior romance.

"If I had my druthers, it wouldn't be to change the studio system. It would be to add two or maybe three languages to my repertoire, which now only consists of street English," Hoffman said in a recent interview.

"But if I could speak French, Spanish and Italian, I'd be working in movies that interested me more. They still honor love stories about people who are past the age of not needing facial work. You can age in Europe."

Hoffman, born and raised in Los Angeles, says he never understood, even as a kid, the obsession with youth and what he calls "the lack of respect for age here that doesn't exist in all countries."

'MY BEST WORK IS ... AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL'

"Last Chance Harvey," written and directed by British filmmaker Joel Hopkins, was tailor-made for Hoffman and Thompson, friends since they made "Stranger than Fiction" a few years ago. Hoffman made sure that Harvey, like himself, was a frustrated jazz pianist.

Divorced, lonely and about to lose his job as a past-his-prime jingles composer, Harvey heads to London for his daughter's wedding. As he obsesses about getting back to New York to save his job, Harvey careens toward failure as a father until he meets sensitive and hopelessly single Kate.

Kate, a middle-aged woman held back by a needy mother and a go-nowhere job, dreams of becoming a writer. A most unlikely pair, Harvey and Kate roam the streets of a romantic London and mull over life and dreams.

A turning point comes when Harvey, at Kate's urging, rushes back to the daughter's wedding and makes a speech that could have gone terribly wrong, but instead redeems him.

Hoffman wrote the speech with his wife of some 30 years the night before filming, dredging up emotions from his own divorce from his first wife when he was making "Kramer vs Kramer" -- a portrait of divorce for which he won his first Academy Award.

"I do my best work when it is, in a sense, autobiographical," said Hoffman. "With 'Tootsie,' I became a better man by having been a woman. In 'Kramer,' he was a bad father and had to become a good father."

As he enters his seventh decade, Hoffman says people pussyfoot around his age for fear of offending him. But he says he has never felt better than he does right now. "That's because I am closer to understanding that your life can be yours and you don't have to feel bad about it," he said.

He hopes to emulate legends who worked up to the end of their lives with good humor, even in failing health. One of his favorite examples is the late comedian George Burns, who said: "Sex at age 90 is like trying to shoot pool with a rope."

"To have that playfulness about mortality," said Hoffman. "If that isn't the object of life, I don't know what is."

Cast member Jennifer Aniston poses at the premiere of the movie "Marley & Me" at the Mann Village theatre in Westwood, California Dec. 11, 2008.

Jennifer Aniston cooks chilli at Christmas. The 'Marley and Me' actress and her family have eaten the spicy dish during the festive period ever since she was a child.
She said: "My favourite tradition is picking out my tree and then the tree trimming. I just got mine! And there's eggnog, Christmas carols, usually chilli, cupcakes. I've cooked the chilli - my mom has a great recipe.
But now I have a lovely lady cook it because I want people to be happy!" Jennifer, 39, recently joked she spends holidays and weekends with ex-husband Brad Pitt, his new partner Angelina Jolie and the couple's six children.
During a revealing interview with America's GQ magazine, for which she posed nude wearing just a necktie, the actress joked: "The funny thing is, people don't realise we all go away to The Hamptons on the weekends.
That would be hysterical - I've got Zahara on my hip, and Knox there too!"

Brad Pitt has reportedly turned down a marriage proposal from Angelina Jolie. Angelina - who raises six children with the actor - is said to be desperate to wed, but Brad wants to attend couples counselling before they tie the knot.

Eddie Murphy's Riddler role

Eddie Murphy is to play The Riddler in the new Batman movie.

The 47-year-old comic actor is reportedly taking on the villainous role for the latest installment in director Christopher Nolan's interpretation of the comic books, due to be released in 2010.

A film insider said: "Eddie's a fantastic addition. Everyone's excited to see what he does as The Riddler."

The actor's expected involvement in the project is the first clear indication of Christopher's intention to shoot a third Batman movie.

The source continued to Britain's The Sun newspaper: "Chris wasn't sure if he wanted to do another movie but as soon as he decided to, he got the wheels in motion."

Eddie isn't the first actor to be linked to the latest incarnation of The Riddler - a manic super-villain who baffles Batman with his cryptic criminal clues and first appeared in the comics in 1948.

Earlier this year, Johnny Depp was hotly-tipped to have landed the role, previously played by Jim Carrey in 1995 film 'Batman Forever'.

It has also been claimed British actress Rachel Weisz is in the running for the seductive role of Catwoman.

Resuming their fight against crime in Gotham City are Christian Bale, who portrays Batman, and Sir Michael Caine who plays butler Alfred.

Johnny Depp's engagement shop

Johnny Depp has reportedly bought an engagement ring for partner Vanessa Paradis.

The 'Pirates of the Caribbean' star asked a high-end California jewellery store to close to the public so he could privately choose a ring for Vanessa, who he has been dating for 10 years.

A source told America's OK! magazine: "This was Johnny's third or fourth visit to the store.

"He looked at an assortment of classic solitaire diamond rings in platinum settings - a really beautiful selection of elegant and understated rings and made a very large purchase."

Johnny - who has two children, Lily Rose, nine and Jack, six, with Vanessa - has previously insisted he and the French star have no desire to marry.

The 45-year-old actor once claimed: "I don't feel like I need a piece of paper that says I own her and she owns me."

Vanessa, 35, recently said she already feels married and has no need to take her relationship further.

She said: "I love the romance of 'Let's get married' but then when you have it so perfect… I mean, I'm more married than anybody can be - we have two kids. Maybe one day, but it's something I can really do without."

Scarlett Johansson's tissue auction

Scarlett Johansson's used tissue is to be auctioned for charity.

The actress, who was plagued by a terrible cold when she appeared on US TV talk show 'The Tonight Show with Jay Leno', left behind the tissue and now network NBC have decided to sell it on website eBay to raise money for food-gathering charity USA Harvest.

The actress is not the only famous face to have an unusual personal item sold on eBay.

Britney Spears' hair clippings - which were collected after she shaved her head in 2007 - and an empty can of Red Bull she had drunk out of attracted bids of over £500,000, but the site removed them before the sale could be completed.

Angelina Jolie's hairbrush has also made it onto the site, as did Heath Ledger's costume from cowboy movie 'Brokeback Mountain'.

A billiard table where Jude Law allegedly got intimate with his nanny has also appeared, as has debris from Shia LaBeouf's car crash earlier this year.

In 2006, a piece of gum chewed by Jessica Simpson just before she filmed a kissing scene with Dane Cook for movie 'Employee of the Month' was listed.
