President Obama sends condolences to Michael Jackson’s family

President Barack Obama has sent his condolences to the family of late pop star Michael Jackson, who died on Thursday afternoon in Los Angeles.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs conveyed the President’s reaction to the loss of the entertainer during a news conference in Washington, D.C. on Friday.

Gibbs recounted to the media President Obama’s reaction, telling reporters the Commander in Chief had commented that “Michael Jackson was a spectacular performer, a music icon. Everyone remembers hearing his songs, watching him moonwalk on television during Motown’s 25th anniversary. But the President also said that [there were] aspects of his life that were sad and tragic. His condolences went out to the Jackson family and fans who [are mourning] his loss.”

As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, Jackson died in Los Angeles after suffering from what is believed to be cardiac arrest at his rented Holmby Hills home on Thursday afternoon.

An autopsy to determine the official cause of death is ongoing. A preliminary report was expected on Friday afternoon, though toxicology reports are expected to take several weeks.

Michelle Obama becomes First Fashion Lady

Barack Obama (L) and his wife Michelle Obama (C) are present at the presidential inauguration ceremony held in front of the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. Jan. 20, 2009.

Fasionists hailed Michelle Obama's choice of inauguration outfit Tuesday, a sparkling golden dress and matching coat designed by Cuban-American designer Isabel Toledo.

The outfit, which Obama wore with soft green leather gloves and pumps, was variously described by fashion watchers as stunning, elegant and bringing fiery warmth on an icy day.

Patricia Mears, deputy director of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, said Obama demonstrated not just taste, but independence.

"We are very excited she has chosen Isabel Toledo. She is incredibly talented, and Mrs. Obama chose the talent rather than the name," Mears said.

"She has also chosen this unusual color, lemongrass, rather than the traditional blue or red. It shows her individuality and character."

Toledo was born in Cuba and came to the United States when she was about 8 years old. Already during Barack Obama's presidential campaign, Toledo emerged as a favorite of the new first lady.

However, the designer told a New York Times blog that she hadn't known her dress would be chosen until the very last minute.

"I wanted to pick a very optimistic color, that had sunshine," she said. "I wanted her to feel charmed, and in that way would charm everybody."

Toledo said that about 13 people in her studio worked on the outfit over Christmas.

"We're all grateful for this opportunity, and we don’t even have a PR person!" Toledo, 48, told The New York Times.

According to the usually well-informed industry journal Women's Wear Daily, Obama chose another Cuban-American designer, Narcisco Rodriguez, for the black and camel-colored attire she wore Sunday at the Lincoln Memorial.

Obama, 45, has already been named a fashion icon by magazine editors, designers and bloggers. Her fashion sense first took center stage when she was photographed by Vogue magazine in autumn 2007.

She can also shift seamlessly between avant-garde designer labels, including Chicago designer Maria Pinto and New York designer Thakoon Panichgul, and mass market brands such as H&M, J. Crew and Gap.

But while Obama is rapidly acquiring the title of first fashion icon, she was not the only one on the steps of the U.S. Capitol to draw attention.

Obama daughters Malia and Sasha were as perfectly turned out as their mother, with the elder in a blue overcoat and scarf, and the younger radiant in a pink overcoat and orange scarf.

Michelle Obama's mother, Marian Robinson opted at the age of 71 for a simple wool hat and red scarf.

But the most original outfit was worn by soul diva Aretha Franklin who sang "Let Freedom Ring" to the crowd. She wore an all grey outfit with a grey felt hat sporting a gigantic bow.

Jennifer Lopez: Obama "biggest A-lister"

Singer and actress Jennifer Lopez poses at the premiere of the movie "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" at the Mann's Village theatre in Westwood, California December 8, 2008. The movie opens in the U.S. on December 25.

One of the world's biggest stars Jennifer Lopez felt a little flustered upon meeting President-elect Barack Obama at the Latino Inaugural Gala in Washington, D.C., according to media reports on Tuesday.

The singer-actress said even with all of Hollywood flocking to the city for the inauguration, President-elect Barack Obama was undeniably the biggest A-lister.

"He is the biggest star here, even though it's chock-full of celebrities," said Lopez. "The night he won the election, you could feel it in the air. I was … watching him with tears in my eyes, thinking, 'Yes. Something is different. Something is happening.' We're very excited."

Lopez's husband, singer Marc Anthony, agreed. "Washington's never had a bigger rock star at the helm," he said. The pair quashed rumors their marriage by holding hands on the Union Station red carpet.

Obama stood up with his family as Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx shouted, "Chi-town, stand up!" The president-elect also laughed heartily at Foxx's imitation of his sometimes monotone.

The Obamas sang along to "This Land is Your Land," as did the big crowd that stretched from the Lincoln Memorial down to the Washington Monument.

U.S. President-elect Barack Obama speaks at the "We Are One: Opening Inaugural Celebration" at the Lincoln Memorial Washington January 18, 2009.

Under the gaze of Abraham Lincoln's statue, Bruce Springsteen and a red-robed gospel choir kicked off a spirited preinaugural concert Sunday before tens of thousands on the National Mall.

The crowd erupted in cheers when Obama and his wife, Michelle, arrived, walking down the steps of the memorial, and kept applauding for the high-energy Springsteen act and the performances that followed.

There was no red carpet, but the event had the feel of a Hollywood awards ceremony, with stars taking the stage to praise, serenade, and even impersonate the next president.

Performers including Bono, Beyonce and James Taylor were on the bill.

A crowd expected to reach up to a half-million was stretched past the reflecting pool separating the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument.

Obama and his wife and Vice President-elect Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, sat behind bullet-proof glass near the stage erected on the steps of the memorial.

The concert began with Springsteen, dressed in black, singing "The Rising," with the help of the choir, taking a song best known as a call to action following the 2001 terror attacks and using it to usher in a new era in American politics.

Denzel Washington was the first celebrity to speak, telling the crowd, "we are all in this together."

Another speaker was actor Tom Hanks, who as Forrest Gump famously gave a speech at the monument steps and jumped into the reflecting pool. This time, he appeared in a dark suit and read a somber tribute to Abraham Lincoln.

Jamie Foxx brought many in the crowd — and the Obamas — to their feet by repeatedly urging those from Chicago to make some noise: "Chi-town, stand up!" he demanded.

The Niche Book - How To Pick A Niche for Profit - Click Here!

President-elect Barack Obama is seen as a child with his mother Ann Dunham in an undated family snapshot from the 1960's.

HBO has closed a seven-figure deal for U.S. rights to an untitled Barack Obama documentary produced by actor Edward Norton.

Norton's Class 5 Films approached the Obama campaign in early 2006 about a documentary chronicling the new president elect's history in politics. Directors Amy Rice and Alicia Sams were granted extensive access to film Obama before he launched his presidential run in 2007 and have continued their shoot through his historic victory this week.

HBO, which has been pursuing rights for several months, plans to air the documentary next year.

"Senator Obama's history-making race for the White House has given our film a perfect framework to explore the pulse of the country at this vital moment in our history," said Norton, who produced the project with Stuart Blumberg and Bill Migliore.

Barack Obama wins U.S. presidential election, McCain concedes defeat

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama waves to supporters at the election night rally in Chicago, the United States, on Nov. 4, 2008, after he won the presidential election.

Democratic Party candidate Barack Obama won a landslide victory in the U.S. presidential election Tuesday. His Republican rival John McCain conceded defeat minutes later.

Short of a final result, projections showed that Obama had collected as many as 297 electoral votes after sweeping traditional blue states in the west, including California (55), Washington (11) and Oregon (7), as well as the Pacific state of Hawaii (4).

Obama, whose father is a black Kenyan and mother a white American, becomes the first African-American president in U.S. history.

His rival, Republican John McCain, 72, got 145 electoral votes, according to TV projections.

A candidate needs 270 electoral votes to win the White House.

Obama, a 47-year-old first term senator from Illinois, became a clear winner even in the early hours of the much-publicized Election Night when U.S. media were joking for eyeballs to project polling results and declared McCain's defeat in key battleground states such as Pennsylvania and Ohio.
