Judge delays sentencing of singer Chris Brown

Chris Brown attends his sentencing hearing with attorney Mark Geragos (R) in Los Angeles August 5, 2009.

A judge on Wednesday postponed the sentencing of R&B singer Chris Brown to make sure his punishment for assaulting former girlfriend Rihanna would include physical labor such as road cleanup.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg rescheduled the sentencing to August 27 to give court officials time to arrange the community service that Brown, 20, must perform as part of a plea deal he made in June on an assault charge.

Brown, whose hits include "Kiss Kiss," pleaded guilty to punching Rihanna, 21, until she was bloodied and bruised on the eve of the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles in February.

He agreed to serve five years probation, attend classes on domestic violence and perform 180 days of community service, which is expected to take place in his home state of Virginia.

Schnegg said she wanted to be assured that Brown would be doing physical work as part of his community service.

The incident between the two young singers sparked an outcry from their fans and groups that offer support and services to victims of domestic abuse.

Last month Brown issued his first public apology, calling his loss of control that night in February, "unacceptable, 100 percent," and asking for forgiveness.

Chris Brown kisses Kanye ex

Chris Brown was "making out" with Amber Rose - while his date looked on.

The 'Run It' star locked lips with the model - the ex-girlfriend of Kanye West - at P. Diddy's White Party in Beverly Hills on Saturday night (04.07.09), despite arriving at the bash with 18-year-old singer Teyana Taylor.

A source told the New York Daily News newspaper: "Diddy announced the DJ would be performing a tribute to Michael Jackson. Chris did an amazing impression of Michael's moonwalk. It wasn't long before he was dancing with Amber.

"They were holding hands and making out in the shadows. She had her hand on his leg."

Taylor was said to be "irked" by her date's behaviour, but still accompanied him to an after-party at Guy's nightclub - only for Chris to continue to pursue the 26-year-old beauty.

The source added: "They were kissing on the dance floor in front of Teyana. But he and Amber left separately."

Last month, Chris received five years probation after pleading guilty to assaulting former girlfriend Rihanna.

Chris Brown gets probation for assault on Rihanna

R&B singer Chris Brown pleaded guilty on Monday to assaulting his former girlfriend, pop star Rihanna, in an agreement with prosecutors that calls for him to spend five years of probation and attend courses on domestic violence.

Brown, singer of the hits "Run It" and "Kiss Kiss," will be formally sentenced August 5. He had faced four years in prison if convicted in a trial on charges of assault and a making a criminal threat. There was no plea deal on a second charge.

In addition to the probation and the domestic violence course in his home state of Virginia, Brown also must perform 180 days of community service.

He was ordered to keep his distance from Rihanna, 21, who was in the courthouse on Monday and prepared to testify against him.

Brown, 20, showed no emotion as his high-profile defense lawyer Mark Geragos told Los Angeles Judge Patricia Schnegg of the plea agreement with prosecutors.

Dressed in a gray suit, the singer was accompanied into the courtroom by his mother and an entourage of supporters.

"I think it's commendable that you took responsibility for your conduct, sir," Schnegg told Brown.

He was accused of beating Rihanna, whose hit songs include "Umbrella," in a rented Lamborghini after the two attended a swanky music industry party in February on the eve of the industry's Grammy Awards.

A police photo of Rihanna's bruised and battered face taken after the incident was leaked to the media but details of what happened that evening have been scant. Brown's plea means that evidence against him will not be heard in an open court.

"Rihanna believes this is a fair and just resolution to this case," her attorney Donald Etra told reporters outside the courthouse following the hearing. He said Barbados-born Rihanna learned of the plea about an hour before the hearing was set to begin Monday afternoon.

L.A. District Attorney spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said the plea was similar to other cases for first-time offenders like Brown and prosecutors had discussed it with Rihanna.

Chris Brown charged with assault on Rihanna

Singer Chris Brown appears with attorney Mark Geragos in the Los Angeles Superior Court in Los Angeles, March 5, 2009.

Singer Chris Brown was charged Thursday with felony assault and making criminal threats in what prosecutors say was a Grammy-eve attack on his girlfriend, the pop star Rihanna.

Brown, 19, appeared briefly in Los Angeles Superior Court but did not enter a plea to the charges. His arraignment was postponed until April 6.

Wearing a gray suit, white shirt and tie, the rising R&B singer stood emotionless, answering only "Yes ma'am" to the judge.

The judge issued an order barring Brown from "harassing, threatening or using force" against anyone. But the singer was not ordered to refrain from contact with Rihanna, with whom he reportedly has reconciled.

Los Angeles prosecutors said Brown attacked Rihanna, 21, late on the night before the February 8 Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.

He could face up to four years in prison if convicted. It was unclear whether Rihanna, who was not in court Thursday, would testify against him.

Both singers pulled out of scheduled performances at the February Grammys, and a photo of Rihanna's bruised and battered face was leaked onto the Internet.

"GREAT BODILY INJURY"

Barbados-born Rihanna, whose full name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty, is identified in the complaint only as "Robyn F." She had not previously been identified by police as the victim.

The formal charges accuse Brown of assaulting Rihanna "by means of force likely to produce great bodily injury" and threatening to commit a crime "which would result in death and great bodily injury."

According to a search warrant affidavit filed by police detectives and released to the media Thursday, the couple argued in a car after Rihanna read a lengthy text message from another woman on Brown's phone.

According to the documents, Brown tried to push Rihanna from his rented Lamborghini but failed because she was wearing a seatbelt.

Brown then shoved Rihanna's head against the passenger window and repeatedly punched her in the face, spattering blood in the car and on her clothing and filling her mouth with blood, the affidavit said.

During the beating, Rihanna left a message for an assistant to have police waiting for the couple at home, prompting Brown to tell her: "You just did the stupidest thing ever. I'm going to kill you."

According to the documents, Brown continued to punch Rihanna, bit her ear and finger and put her into a headlock. The charges were filed a week after Brown and Rihanna, who dated for about a year, were reported by celebrity magazines to be back together again.

Brown broke onto the Billboard charts in 2005 at the age of 16 with his single "Run It!" and sold 2 million copies of his self-titled debut album.

Rihanna also released her debut album in 2005 and had a number one hit single with "S.O.S" less than a year later. She followed with three more number ones: "Umbrella," "Take a Bow" and "Disturbia."

Rihanna and Chris Brown reported back together

Pop star Rihanna was reported on Friday to have reunited with her R&B singer boyfriend Chris Brown, less than three weeks after he was alleged to have assaulted her.

People magazine said Barbados-born Rihanna -- who had hits with "Umbrella" and "Disturbia" -- and Brown were spending time together at one of the homes of hip hop mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs.

"They're together again. They care for each other," People quoted an unidentified source as saying.

"While Chris is reflective and saddened about what happened, he is really happy to be with the woman he loves," the source said in a report on People's website.

A representative of Chris Brown had no comment on the People report. Rihanna's publicist could not immediately be reached.

Brown, 19, a rising young star with a huge teen fan base, was arrested on February 8 on suspicion of making criminal threats against a woman after a late-night altercation in a car.

Los Angeles prosecutors have not yet decided whether to file formal charges against Brown, who performed chart-toppers "Run It!" and "Forever."

A picture of a bruised Rihanna with swollen lips was leaked on the Internet last week, apparently from Los Angeles police files, and added credence to widespread reports that the woman involved was her.

The assault on the eve of the Grammy Awards caused both stars to cancel their scheduled appearances. It sent shockwaves through the music industry and stunned fans of the couple, who had been dating for about a year.

Rihanna returned to her family in Barbados and Brown issued a statement on February 15 saying he was "sorry and saddened" about the incident and was seeking counseling.

People magazine reported earlier this week that Brown telephoned Rihanna on her 21st birthday a week ago.

"He called to wish her happy birthday," a source told the magazine. "They've reached out to each other. It's been mutual."

Rihanna's pap problem

Rihanna and Chris Brown are being sued for $1 million after their bodyguards allegedly attacked a photographer.

Paparazzo Luis Santana claims the pair's security assaulted him and broke his camera after he took pictures proving their much rumoured relationship.

Brown's solicitor Kenneth Meiselas denies the singer or his security team were involved in the incident, while 'Umbrella' singer Rihanna's spokesman labelled the matter "really unfortunate" and claims it was "completely blown out of proportion".

Santana - who works for publication tbt - claims his shirt was torn off before he was knocked to the ground and repeatedly kicked by the guards outside the Vintage Ultra Lounge club in St. Petersburg, US.

He said: "Once I got the pictures of Chris and Rihanna, Chris jumped out of the limo and his bodyguards began chasing me.
One of the guys ripped my shirt off and grabbed me. They threw me to the ground and started kicking me. One of the guys put his knee in my face and was pressing down. I thought they were going to break my jaw."

Santana, 26, also claims the guards took his $3,000 camera after the incident in May.

He added: "At the time they were just a rumoured couple. Chris was celebrating his birthday with her and that was a huge photo. I guess they didn't want it out."

The photographer's lawyer - who is filing the lawsuit on the grounds of his client's personal injuries, emotional distress and theft - insists the photographs would have been worth thousands of dollars.

The Times Publishing Co. - which owns tbt - is not involved in the case.

The pop pair have long been rumoured to be dating but have always denied the claims, despite having matching tattoos and having been pictured kissing.
