Natalie Portman names son Alef
Natalie Portman has named her baby son Alef.
The Oscar-winning actress and her fiance, choreographer Benjamin Millepied, have named their first child - who was born last month - after the first letter in the Hebrew alphabet.
According to Israeli TV Show 'Good Evening with Guy Pines', the Jewish actress decided to pay homage to her motherland with the moniker, which also means the "oneness of God".
Meanwhile, the couple - who met on the set of 'Black Swan'- have decided their son will adopt both their last names with the surname Portman-Millepied.
Prior to the birth of baby Alef, who is yet to be seen in public, Natalie admitted her Jewish ancestry had caused her to be "superstitious".
She explained: "I think it's a Jewish thing to be kind of superstitious. You don't do any of the baby stuff before the baby arrives."
Throughout her pregnancy Natalie paid tribute to her parents Avner and Shelley Hershlag, saying she hoped to look after her child in the same way that she was brought up.
She said: "If I am a shadow as good a parent, an echo, then I will be the best in the world, so thank you."

Natalie Portman's Twilight crush
The 27-year-old actress - who split from boyfriend Devendra Banhart last September and has also been romantically linked to Maroon 5's Adam Levine and multi-billionaire Nat Rothschild - was spotted flirting with the young 'Twilight' star at Vanity Fair's Oscar party on Sunday (22.02.09).
An onlooker said: "The two totally flirted outside on the patio. Natalie is used to getting what she wants and she dominated Robert's attentions for most of the evening."
It seems Natalie has competition for Robert's affections.
Paris Hilton was also keen to snare the British actor on Oscars night.
The blonde hotel heiress stunned guests at Patrick Whitesell's Hollywood party when she dragged Robert, 22, into the garden for some private time together.
Before she led him away, the pair were seen "giggling and in deep conversation" for an hour and seemed oblivious to other guests.
Paris, 28, fell for the screen hunk after watching 'Twilight', in which he plays a vampire.
She said: "I saw 'Twilight' and I have to say that I think Robert is a beautiful man and an amazing actor. He's fabulous!"

Natalie Portman's Banhart break-up
Natalie Portman and Devendra Banhart have reportedly split up. 'The Other Boleyn Girl' star - who first started dating the folk singer in March after starring in the music video for his single 'Carmensita' - has decided to call time of their relationship, despite moving from New York to Los Angeles to be with Devendra.A source close to the musician told In Touch Weekly magazine: "Natalie and Devendra have broken up. They will remain friends but need some space and time away." In April, Natalie, 27, and the bearded singer, who is also 27, were photographed kissing and holding hands as they strolled through the West Village wearing matching black coats and sunglasses.
Natalie - who has previously been romantically linked to a host of actors including Jake Gyllenhaal, Zach Braff and Gael Garcia Bernal - recently vowed to never marry.
She explained: "I'm into monogamy. But I'm not really into marriage. I sort of hate the legal aspect of it. What does the state have to do with it?"
