Zac Efron parties in Canada

Zac Efron has enjoyed a wild night out in Vancouver.

The 'High School Musical' actor - who has been desperate to shed his clean cut image in recent months - shocked onlookers by drinking a variety of alcoholic beverages during an evening with friends at Canadian night spot Opus Bar.

A source told entertainment blog FOX411: "They were all about partying. They were downing one Bitter Cherry Salome Sour after another, until they moved on to super strong Belvedere vodka and sodas.

"They looked like they were really celebrating!"

The 21-year-old star and his pals insisted on toasting each other whenever one of them went to the bar and came back with another drink.

Zac has previously claimed he tries to keep his partying in check as he does not want it to interfere with his career.

He has said: "There's a time for celebration and I partake, sure. But, you know, it's important not to let that become too big of a distraction. The more you have access to, the harder it is to remain focused.

"I do not want to fall victim to that, it's too easy and too often done. It's out of style anyway. I think the rebellious thing to do would to actually be successful."

Zac Efron still hot for Hudgens

Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens can't keep their hands off each other.

The 'High School Musical' co-stars - who have been dating since they started filming the Disney franchise in 2005 - looked closer than ever as they partied at Teddy's bar in Los Angeles after the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday (31.05.09).

A source said: "They were holding hands, dancing close and always had their arms around each other."

The couple, who have been dogged by rumours they are set to split, were joined by a host of other celebrities at the exclusive venue including 'What Happens in Vegas' star Cameron Diaz and 'Twilight' co-stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart.

Meanwhile, Zac has revealed he turned down the lead role in upcoming musical movie 'Footloose' because he needs a holiday.

He said: "I have to regroup because this is all kind of crazy and there's lots of people here, but it doesn't make you feel like a real person. So it's nice to take some time off and remember what your life's about."

The 21-year-old hunk is thrilled the role will be played by 'Gossip Girl' star Chace Crawford instead.

He said: "I'm ecstatic for him. We're both in very different places and it just happened to work out. I think it's going to work out for the best."

Zac Efron carefully plotting next move

With this past weekend's $23.7 million opening of "17 Again," Zac Efron has taken his first successful step toward carving out a career beyond the "High School Musical" franchise that shot him to popularity.

Now he faces the even trickier prospect of building on that momentum as he plots his next move.

"I'm looking very carefully at the movies being offered," Efron said last week on the eve of "17's" bow. "It's about taking my fan base with me but then doing movies that open me up to a broader level."

To that end, "17" could be considered a cinematic bar mitzvah of sorts: The 21-year-old actor proved that he is more than just another pretty boy and that he could be on the verge of becoming a young leading man.

Certainly, some in Hollywood are rooting for him. With such A-listers as Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp well into their 40s and Matt Damon and Ben Affleck moving through their 30s, the industry is hungrily looking for new matinee idols to replenish its stock.

Just a few years ago, Efron was scoring parts like Pizza Delivery Guy in the pilot for the short-lived NBC series "Heist," but when "High School Musical" exploded -- first on Disney Channel, then as a theatrical spin-off in October -- Efron showed a talent for winning over the hearts of young girls.

The question now is whether Efron can take it beyond a tween following, which alone wouldn't make for career longevity. Can he parlay his singing and dancing abilities into a full-fledged career, as John Travolta has?

STAR QUALITY

"17," one in a long line of body-swapping comedies -- older guy Matthew Perry re-experiences high school in the guise of Efron -- hardly was designed to please persnickety critics. But a few have come forward to compliment the young actor.

"Though Efron's acting range is limited, he has a genial charm and decent comic timing," Claudia Puig wrote in USA Today. Added Stephanie Zacharek at Salon.com, "He appears not to be hung up on his looks -- he talks and moves like a guy who knows he's had an extraordinary stroke of good luck and nothing more."

Said Adam Shankman, who directed Efron in a supporting role in 2007's "Hairspray" and produced "17," "I think every once in a while, a game-changer comes along, and I think Zac is a game-changer."

Jennifer Gibgot, who also produced "17," said Efron's potential could be seen during the making of "Hairspray."

"The dailies were the impetus for this movie," she said. "We saw them and started calling New Line saying, 'We need to develop a movie for this kid, he's a star.'"

As if taking his cues from Cruise and Will Smith, known for their nonstop efforts to promote their movies by meeting with fans and media around the world, Efron didn't stop working when principal photography wrapped; he took an active role in the movie's promotion.

He worked the talk show circuit, made a detour through London and hosted "Saturday Night Live." He maintained his composure on "The Today Show," when Kathy Lee Gifford made a surprise appearance to pretend to berate him for impersonating her son Cody on "SNL."

But instead, he decides to throw it all away to share his life with his girlfriend Scarlett and the baby he just learned they are expecting. Almost 20 years later, Mike's glory days are decidedly behind him. His marriage to Scarlett has fallen apart, he has been passed over for a promotion at work, his teenage kids think he is a loser, and he has been reduced to crashing with his high school nerd-turned-techno-billionaire best friend Ned. But Mike is given another chance when he is miraculously transformed back to the age of 17. Unfortunately, Mike may look 17 again, but his thirtysomething outlook is totally uncool in the class of 2009. Zac Efron bribes fans

Zac Efron uses posters of himself as bribes.

The '17 Again' actor always keeps memorabilia of his films in the boot of his car to help him get out of difficult situations.

Zac, 21, said: "I've kind of got it figured out. I just pull in to the lot at the movie studio and photographers can't follow me.

"The first time I did it, they weren't going to let me in. The guy at the gate was like, 'What are you going to do for me?' I said, 'What do you want me to do?' He's like, 'I got kids.' And I was like, 'Well, I got a poster in the trunk!'

"It's smart to keep some swag in the trunk, just in case."

Zac also added he hates to keep paraphernalia from his most successful film venture 'High School Musical' in his house, instead filling his garage and parents' home with merchandise.

He also said he is trying to be taken seriously as an actor and shed his clean-cut image.

Zac continued to America's GQ magazine: "It's such a fine line between being famous for who you are personally and for your films. And I've been on the wrong side of it my whole career.

"A guy I worked with recently told me, 'You have to earn the right to hold a gun.' And that completely made sense.

"Most parts you'd want, people won't really consider you for, because you have to earn that respect.

"Somebody said to me, 'What do you want to do? A cool crime drama? Do you want to shoot up heroin? We'll do anything you want to do...the Musical."

Review: You've seen `17 Again' — again and again

In this film publicity still released by Warner Bros., Zac Efron is shown in a scene from, '17 Again.'

"17 Again" is one of those movies that requires you to suspend all disbelief and assume that someone who looks like Zac Efron could, in 20 years, turn into someone who looks like Matthew Perry.

(Those must have been some rough years — either that or Rob Lowe wasn't available.)

Can't do it, you say? Well, that detail is just about as implausible as the film's premise itself: Mike O'Donnell (Perry), a miserable father of two on the brink of divorce, gets a chance to relive his high school days and improve his future by becoming 17 in the present day, all thanks to the magical powers of a mystical janitor (Brian Doyle-Murray).

It's always some odd figure on the fringe who brings about this kind of fantastic transformation, isn't it? This guy literally says to Mike: "I bet you wish you had it to do all over again."

Well yes, there are a lot of elements in "17 Again" that feel awfully familiar. Director Burr Steers, a long way from his darkly comic, coming-of-age debut "Igby Goes Down," takes you places you've been before — many times — in more charming movies like "Big," "13 Going on 30," "Freaky Friday," "Never Been Kissed" and even "Back to the Future." The idea of going back to high school is so overdone, there was even an entire episode of "Family Guy" that parodied it. (Jason Filardi is credited with writing "17 Again.")

But rather than changing his decision to abandon his dreams of basketball stardom and marry the girlfriend he knocked up, Mike realizes his true purpose is to reconnect with his wife, Scarlet (played as an adult by Leslie Mann), and teenage kids Maggie and Alex (Michelle Trachtenberg and Sterling Knight). The result is facile and feel-good, not engaging or insightful.

Efron maintains the dreamy presence that made the tweens scream in the "High School Musical" series — those eyes! those cheekbones! — which is on full display when Mike-as-adult-as-kid gets a makeover from the K-Fed get-up he initially dons in a feeble attempt at fitting in. He steps out of a Porsche, purchased by his nerdy childhood best friend Ned (Thomas Lennon of "Reno 911!") who grew up to make it big as a computer geek, and with his aviator sunglasses and devil-may-care shag haircut, he looks like ... well, he looks like Zac Efron. At least Steers knows how to capitalize on his star's strongest attributes.

Efron also enjoys a couple of amusing scenes here as a grown-up delivering uptight diatribes in a boy's body, and he connects with Mann in a way that surprisingly isn't all that creepy. But he still seems too pretty and lightweight to be a persuasive leading man capable of carrying a film. It'll happen, though. There's time.

It certainly doesn't help his cause that he's been given such a cliched depiction of high school life in which to function. The jocks (the leader of whom is conveniently dating Mike's daughter), the nerds, the awkward cafeteria moments and an out-of-control house party — they're all there, with nothing new to give them fresh life.

It makes the singing-and-dancing hijinks of the East High Wildcats look downright subversive by comparison.

"17 Again," a Warner Bros. Pictures release, is rated PG-13 for language, some sexual material and teen partying. Running time: 98 minutes. Two stars out of four.

Zac Efron's secret cinema dates

Zac Efron loves early morning cinema trips.

The '17 Again' star says his and 'High School Musical' co-star girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens enjoy watching movies but avoid busy evening screenings so they can have some privacy.

He said: "That's probably like, the best thing to do - we just don't go on a Friday night or Saturday night. It'll be like 9am on a Tuesday."

Although the 21-year-old star enjoys hanging out with his girlfriend, he also confessed to a love of older women.

He said "Moms are always fun to hang out with at premieres. I figured out where it's at... 40 is where it's at."

Zac is aware he gets a lot of female attention, but can't understand why people complement his hair so much as he never does anything to style it.

He explained to US TV show 'Extra': "It's really derived from laziness. It's cool. I sleep on it, wake up and then walk outside. It would be funny if it took four hours to do. It doesn't."

Despite not taking care of his hair, Zac pays more attention to the rest of his body.

The actor reportedly splashes out on expensive emu oil treatments to remove scars and unsightly blemishes from his skin.

A source said: "Zac applies emu oil daily to a scar he got from his appendectomy. He can't handle having imperfect abs and the oil, which is made from the bird's fat is said to fade scars."

Zac Efron had sex lessons

Zac Efron says parents must be "passionate" about sex.

The 'High School Musical' actor - who is dating his co-star Vanessa Hudgens - says it is important for adults to be enthusiastic when discussing sex and contraception with their children.

Speaking about his talk with his father David Efron, Zac said: "I just feel like my dad, at one point, had that conversation with me and my little brother, and always delivered it very well. He was very passionate about it."

The 21-year-old hunk recently admitted his mother Starla is not quite so relaxed about addressing his sex life and was upset when she saw a photograph of him and Vanessa apparently leaving a sex toy shop.

He explained: "My mom is like, 'Zac, what did you buy in a sex shop?' I was like, 'Mom, calm down, it's not a sex shop.' She wouldn't have any of it.

"She's like, 'I knew you were being sexual!' But she understood. My stocking was full of condoms this Christmas. She buys me the economy box."

'High School Musical 3' wins at Kids Choice Awards

"High School Music 3: Senior Year" graduated with honors Saturday at the Kids Choice Awards.

The Disney musical was selected as the favorite movie by audience votes at the 22nd annual slime-filled Nickelodeon spectacle held inside UCLA's Pauley Pavilion. "High School Musical" star Vanessa Hudgens was also selected as the favorite movie actress.

"Lately, a lot of people have been taking credit for bringing back the musical," Zac Efron said while accepting the movie's trophy. "The truth is we've known who's been responsible for bringing back the musical all along. It was you guys!"

The show's hijinks kicked off with host and "Race to Witch Mountain" star Dwayne Johnson zip-lining over the audience of screaming teens and tweens into a "slime temple." Johnson proceeded to spray the first row with gooey green slime. Other shenanigans included squirting singer Jesse McCartney with a fake microphone and Will Farrell slipping and sliding down a hill.

Winners included "iCarly" for TV show, "American Idol" for reality show, Jonas Brothers for music group and "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa" for animated movie. Jack Black arrived in motorcycle sidecar to pick up his award for favorite voice from an animated film for "Kung Fu Panda."

Miley Cyrus was brought to tears when she was announced as favorite female singer.

"I really thought I was gonna lose, so thank you, guys," said Cyrus.

Johnson said over 90 million viewer votes were cast at Nick's Web site. Instead of envelopes, blimp recipients were revealed from inside spy-like steel briefcases. Some held surprises throughout the show. Before presenters Sandra Bullock and Hugh Jackman announced the "Twilight" series as favorite book, a briefcase doused the pair with green slime.

The green theme took on an entirely different meaning when Cameron Diaz presented her "Gangs of New York" co-star Leonardo DiCaprio with the first-ever Big Green Help Award. The "Titanic" and "Revolutionary Road" actor was selected to receive the green blimp trophy because of his contribution and promotion of environmental issues.

"Right now, our mother — our mother — all of our mothers, Mother Earth is hurting," said DiCaprio. "And she needs a generation of thoughtful, caring and active kids like all of you to protect her for the future. You can help us win the battle to clean up our air, our water, our land, to protect our forests, our oceans and our wildlife."

Most of the blimp recipients were relegated to brief announcements before and after the commercials.

Among those winners were "Wizards of Waverly Place" star Selena Gomez for TV actress, "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody" star Dylan Sprouse for TV actor, "SpongeBob SquarePants" for cartoon, Jesse McCartney for male singer, Beyonce's "Single Ladies" for song, Will Smith for movie actor, "Guitar Hero World Tour" for video game, Candace Parker for female athlete and Peyton Manning for male athlete.

Earlier this year, controversy found its way into the show when pop star Chris Brown withdrew his name from Kids' Choice contention. The nominations were announced shortly before his arrest for allegedly attacking girlfriend and fellow Kids' Choice nominee Rihanna. Neither was in attendance Saturday, and Rihanna, twice nominated, lost in both categories.

The show concluded with Johnson and a troop of Polynesian dancers summoning the "slime temple" to spew the sticky stuff all over the audience. Instead, the Jonas Brothers emerged and sang a cappella, causing slime to cascade over the boy band, Johnson, the dancers and much of the audience.

"What you guys don't know is that's real boogers," comedian Marlon Wayans said earlier in the show.

Zac Efron's canine cake

Actors Zac Efron (L) and Vanessa Hudgens watch the New York Knicks play the Los Angeles Lakers during their NBA basketball game in Los Angeles, December 16, 2008.

Zac Efron accidentally ate dog food recently.

The 'High School Musical' star snacked on some cupcakes his girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens had left on the table, but was shocked to discover she had bought them for her dogs.

A source said: "Vanessa bought her pet dog Shadow some cakes from upscale pet store The Wagging Tale. She left them on the counter, and Zac ate a few.
He said that they were good, if a little bland."

This is not the first time Zac's bizarre diet has been laid bare - his 'High School Musical' co-star Vanessa previously admitted he liked drinking raw eggs for breakfast.

After revealing Zac doesn't often eat cereal for breakfast, Vanessa explained: "He's more of an eggs kind of guy. If he's feeling lazy he just drinks them. Not most of the time, but every now and then."

A writer for the website explained: "They rode the little-TV-movie-that-could, 'High School Musical,' to box office gold and worldwide fame in 2008. And they have perfect teeth. But their love cannot last post-'High School Musical', as their careers pull them apart, forever. "So appreciate them now, while their love burns with the heat of a million flashbulbs. Congratulations to our Favourite Couple of 2008!"

Zac and Vanessa were closely followed by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who made it into second place thanks to their continued philanthropic efforts and the addition of twins Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline into their family in July.

Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry were positioned in third place, while the top five was rounded off by Gwen Stefani and husband Gavin Rossdale and Liev Schrieber and Naomi Watts - who welcomed their second son Samuel into the world last weekend. "High School Musical 3" remains atop N. American box office

Disney's song-and-dance film "High School Musical 3: Senior Year," which opened last week as the biggest-grossing musical movie ever, remained atop the box office in North America this weekend, according to preliminary figures released Sunday.

Director of the movie Kenny Ortega (C) holds Manly 'Little Pickles' Ortega from the movie, as he poses with cast members Ashley Tisdale (L) and Zac Efron at the premiere of the movie "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" at Galen Center in Los Angeles Oct. 16, 2008.

The first big-screen version and third installment of the original made-for-television franchise by Disney Channel is expected to take in 15 million dollars over the three-day period, with 61.8 million dollars over two weeks in U.S. and Canadian theaters.

Meanwhile, HSM3 took in about 26 million dollars overseas this weekend, being No. 1 in each of its 26 international markets and with a foreign total of 85 million dollars since its release. It has grossed nearly 150 million dollars globally in just 10 years.

The Weinstein Company's comedy "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" debuted in No. 2 with 10.7 million dollars. The R-rated film is about two cash-strapped roommates who try to make adult films to pay off their bills.

Cast member Vanessa Hudgens greets fans at the premiere of the movie "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" at Galen Center in Los Angeles Oct. 16, 2008. The movie opens in the U.S. on Oct. 24.

Last week's runner-up "Saw V" slipped to No. 3 with 10.1 million dollars over the weekend, while "Changeling" from Oscar-winning director Clint Eastwood and actress Angelina Jolie, was in No. 4 with 9.4 million dollars as it expanded to wide release.

In "Changeling," which was based a legal case in 1920s Los Angeles, Jolie played a single mother who fights against the city's bureaucratic police department after her son disappears.

New release "The Haunting of Molly Hartley," a horror film from Freestyle Releasing, was in No. 5 with 6 million dollars over the Halloween weekend, which saw Hollywood's overall sales slumping as the holiday fell on Friday coincidentally this year.

The top-selling 12 movies took in about 75.17 million dollars collectively this weekend, down about 38 percent from the same period last year. It was the first "down" weekend for Hollywood after five "up" weekends.
