Katy Perry named '1st artist of year'

Katy Perry's run of No. 1 singles has earned her the distinction of becoming MTV's first artist of the year.

Perry topped Adele after a spirited discussion among MTV's internal panel of experts, the network said Thursday. Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" was chosen top song of 2011, said Amy Doyle, the network's chief of music programming.

MTV also declared Skrillex its electronic dance music artist of the year over David Guetta.

Different parts of MTV would make "best of" lists in the past, but the network wanted to establish a franchise that brought all its online and TV arms together and emphasized MTV's music roots, Doyle said. The network, established in 1981, hopes it becomes an annual thing.

Seven panelists made the final choice, and their deliberations were featured in MTV programming this week.

"Rolling in the Deep" was an obvious selection as top song, Doyle said. Runners-up were Nicki Minaj's "Super Bass" and Rihanna's "We Found Love."

"I loved the song the moment I wrote it," Adele said. "The melody and the beat added some conviction to it. I think that's why people connected with it."

Perry's achievement of tying Michael Jackson's "Bad" as the only albums to yield five No. 1 singles was particularly impressive, Doyle said. Along with the title cut, "California Gurls," ''E.T.," "Firework" and "Last Friday Night" (T.G.I.F.) all topped the charts. She's trying to beat the record with the current single "The One That Got Away."

"You just really felt her presence in pop culture throughout the year," Doyle said.

Skrillex, whose real name is Sonny Moore, describes his music as a combination of "dubstep, electro and glitch." MTV included the category of best electronic dance music artist to pay tribute to the way the style is taking off with its young viewers, she said.

MTV also asked its viewers to vote on their choice of the best live performances shown on MTV all year. Their choice was "Hurricane" by Thirty Seconds to Mars.

Katy Perry to get fans' help on perfume

Katy Perry will ask her fans to guess the name of her new perfume via twitter.

The 'California Gurls' hitmaker - who released her debut fragrance Purr, earlier this year - will launch the new scent later this year in association with Gigantic Parfums and from next week on will invite her twitter followers to submit their ideas for its name.

According to WWD, Katy, 26, created the new fragrance while on her 'California Dreams' world tour.

The popstar has previously claimed her Purr fragrance is "like the Goldilocks of perfume", saying people can tell from their very first sniff that the "cute" scent is "just right" and matched perfectly to her wild, fun loving, loud and convivial nature.

She said: "It's like the Goldilocks of perfume. It s not too much, it's not too forgettable, it's just right. It's basically me in a bottle. I think a lot of people go up and they go, 'That's definitely Katy Perry. This is definitely Katy Perry's perfume.' "

She has also gave advice on the best way to apply the scent.

She said: "I usually spray and walk through. I never spray directly on

"I've heard that you're not supposed to spray directly on the skin. Then it's not so concentrated, because everybody knows sometimes when a woman walks into a room, she can smell like her grandmother."

Katy Perry to sit on wedding throne

Katy Perry and Russell Brand will sit on giant thrones for their wedding ceremony.

The pair - who are rumoured to be getting married in India on Saturday (23.10.10) - have chosen the ornate seats for their traditional Indian wedding ceremony which is set to take place at the luxury Aman-i-Khas resort in Rajasthan.

When they tried out the thrones Katy and Russell are said to have "burst out laughing".

The couple started the week-long celebration last night (21.10.10) with a Bollywood-style feast featuring dancers and snake-charmers.

A source told The Sun newspaper: "They are very much keeping to Indian tradition. There will be feasting and dancing. And Katy will be painted head-to-toe in henna tattoos."

Rajasthan Tours manager Mohan Singh, whose company is helping to organise the event confirmed both Russell, 35, and 25-year-old Katy want a traditional wedding.

He told the USA Today newspaper: "This would be a colourful Rajasthan wedding, and both Brand and Perry will be attired in Indian wedding attires."

He also revealed the couple have hired 13 vehicles to take some of their 80 guests on tours of the Ranthambore National Park wildlife sanctuary in the days following the nuptials.

Singh also revealed Russell and Katy will be staying in a luxury tent at the Aman-i-Khas resort, just outside the sanctuary, with guests staying at the nearby Vanyavilas and Sher Bagh resorts.

Katy Perry wedding date revealed

Katy Perry and Russell Brand are planning to marry in India next weekend.

The couple are set to wed next Saturday (23.10.10) in a traditional Indian ceremony at the luxury Taj Rambagh Palace hotel in Jaipur- where they got engaged on New Year's Eve (31.12.09) last year-in front of 85 guests.

It is believed the pair - who have been dating since September 2009 - will take the entire wedding party for a tiger safari during a three-day stay at Rajasthan wilderness camp the Aman-i-Khas, before the ceremony.

Russell, 35, recently claimed the ceremony will be low-key, despite reports of a six-day bash and said the couple don't want a typical celebrity wedding.

He explained: "We just love each other and we want to get married in front of our friends and family and keep it very normal. It ain't about selling the pictures, it ain't about doing no pre-nup, it's just a normal thing.

"I'm trying to preserve it, to keep it a beautiful thing. I think people get the wrong idea on how we want the wedding to play out. Love between two people is the most spectacular yet ordinary thing in the world."

Despite the British comedian's claims that he and Katy, 25 are a low-key couple, he did joke that they could make a sex tape together.

When asked if they would ever star in a film together, Russell replied: "We'll do a sex tape! Give them what they want!"

The 'I Kissed A Girl' singer - who is set to exchange vows with fiance Russell Brand in October - has yet to find the perfect wedding dress for their intimate ceremony, but is already cutting back on fatty foods in preparation.

She said: "I'm preparing a little bit here and there. I have to stop eating McDonald's and start my dance classes."

The 25-year-old pop star - who accepted the comedian's marriage proposal after a four-month whirlwind romance - is reportedly already thinking about having children with Russell.

A friend close to Katy said: "She's totally in love with him. She never stops talking about Russell and is already talking about how she can't wait to make him a dad."

Russell - who abandoned his womanising ways in order to settle down with Katy - also recently admitted he was beginning to feel broody.

When asked if he wanted to be a dad, the 34-year-old star said: "That would be good, I do want children."

The 'Hot N Cold' singer has reportedly been puffing on more and more cigarettes as her nuptials to British comedian Russell Brand draw closer, but is now planning drastic action to stop the deadly habit before it ruins her singing voice.

According to the Daily Mirror newspaper, the singer told a pal: "I'm stressed out with the wedding and I keep smoking to calm my nerves. I do it even though I know it is really bad for me and I know I need to stop.

"So I'm thinking I am going to have hypnotherapy to help me get over it. I'd never say to kids, 'This is cool'. It's a really bad habit that I need to quit."

Katy, 25, recently confessed that even though she has a successful career worldwide and a famous fiance she can be unsure of herself.

She explained: "Even the most confident people still have their moments of insecurity. And even though I may come across as loud and bubbly and brimming with confidence, I can be a shy girl too."

"I look like Rocky.

This way I can ensure that everything is firmly in place and I won't have a wardrobe malfunction. Don't want those boulders doing a show of their own!"

She said: "No one believes I grew my own boobs. Everyone thinks they're fake because they're double Ds. Also people think my parents are stiff and strict because they are church ministers. But they're so funny, cool and modern. My dad has just got four tattoos."

Katy also claims her sister is responsible for her success as Angela got her interested in singing at a young age.

She added: "I fell into singing at the age of nine because I was copying everything my sister did. She started having singing lessons and I was like, 'I want them too'. "

She added to Britain's Cosmopolitan magazine: "It's always been difficult because I'm so picky.

"And if I go to dinner with a guy, people automatically think we're dating. And then when you do start dating it becomes a race to the altar."

Katy Perry is engaged. Gym Class Heroes frontman Travis McCoy - who has been dating the 'Hot N Cold' singer since 2005 - reportedly proposed during a romantic trip to Paris by kissing Katy, 24, with a huge diamond ring in his mouth.

A source said: "Katy was stunned. She knew Travis was planning to pop the question but had no idea how he was going to do it. She was amazed at how original the proposal was." It is not yet known when the loved up couple plan to set a date for their nuptials or whether they have told their families they are betrothed.

Earlier this year, Travis, 27, revealed he had bought Katy a "promise" ring to signify the strength of their relationship.

He said: "I went in to the jewellery store and said I wanted a ring. The lady behind the counter said, 'Here's one for $300.' I was like, 'I want a nice ring!' Then I pointed to the big one. "I was so scared to give it to her but she was so excited! And I'd set up flowers everywhere."
