Ziyi: In love as always

Zhang Ziyi's romantic relationship with multi-millionaire Vivi Nevo may have undergone twists and turns, but the latest photos of the lovebirds prove that love is continuing between the Chinese actress and her fiancé.

A number of photos dated September 26, 2009 have emerged on the Internet, showing Zhang and Nevo watching a fashion show in Milan, Italy, their hands clasped.

This was the first time the high-profile couple was spotted together in more than four months, according to China News Service. Previously, Nevo was seen accompanying Zhang to film festivals worldwide.

Chinese tabloids are calling the couple's Milan appearance a "dramatic reunion".

Zhang, who launched an international career after playing the lead role in Ang Lee's Oscar-winning 2000 film "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", began dating Vivi Nevo in 2007. She was engaged to the major Time Warner shareholder last year.

However, as fans were expecting to see Zhang tie the knot, in June this year Nevo suddenly announced a postponement to the planned August wedding, citing busy work schedules as the reason.

Zhang then returned to China promoting her latest film, a romantic comedy entitled "Sophie's Revenge". Not wearing her engagement ring, she told Chinese media, "If I were married, I would want to spend the rest of my life with my husband, just like my parents do. Although divorce is not the end of the world, I suddenly felt scared."

The remarks aroused wide speculation that Zhang's relationship was already on the edge. The actress however denied such rumors, saying "everything is alright."

The postponed wedding is still pending, though the pair avoided questions about a wedding date in Milan.

'Crouching Tiger' star Zhang Ziyi to try romantic comedy

"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" star Zhang Ziyi is trying her hand at romantic comedy after a series of dramas.

In "Sophie's Revenge," the 30-year-old actress will play a comic book artist who plots to get her fiance back after losing him to an actress. Written and directed by Chinese-American filmmaker Eva Jin, the 50 million Chinese yuan ($7.3 million) Chinese-language film also stars Chinese actress Fan Bingbing as Sophie's rival Joanna and South Korean actor So Ji-sub as Sophie's fiance Jeff.

In response to written questions from The , Zhang described "Sophie's Revenge" as a fun-loving movie.

"We will follow Sophie's journey in the movie, crying with her and laughing with her. I hope a story like this will resonate with everyone," Zhang said.

"Sophie's Revenge," which will be released in China on Aug. 14 and in South Korea on Aug. 20, marks a change of pace for Zhang after four dramas. She played a Japanese escort in the 2005 Hollywood film "Memoirs of a Geisha," then an empress in "The Banquet," Chinese director Feng Xiaogang's 2006 adaptation of "Hamlet." Zhang next portrayed a friend of late Peking Opera star Mei Lanfang in Chen Kaige's 2008 biopic "Forever Enthralled." She also played a villain alongside Dennis Quaid in the 2009 American-Canadian crime thriller "Horsemen."

Zhang's new film, a South Korean-Chinese co-production, is also her debut as a producer. She said that director Jin approached her with her script and she secured funding for the project.

"I really learned many more things serving as the producer. I now have a better understanding of the work flow of a movie," she said.

Check out the recently-released photos of Zhang Ziyi filming a new commercial for Platinum Guild International in New Zealand earlier this year. Zhang has been endorsing PGI, a service provider of platinum jewelry, since 2007.

One of PGI's taglines is "Precious as you are." In a video shot on location, Zhang Ziyi says she regards a precious woman to be someone who has a perfect family as well as a job she enjoys.

Zhang's definition of a "precious woman" seems to be a portrait of herself. The 30-year-old actress is engaged to multi-millionaire Vivi Nevo, who is seen accompany Zhang to all kinds of occasions. As for her film career, Zhang is making headway in a new field, producing the upcoming romantic comedy "Sophie's Revenge".

Actress Zhang Ziyi made a brief visit on Friday to dozens of orphaned children and teenagers in Deyang, Sichuan Province.

Zhang, who is an ambassador for the charity organization Care for Children, was warmly received by the kids there who called her "Ziyi sister".

After presenting gifts to the youngsters, Zhang Ziyi spent some time chatting with them.

"These children need to know that they are loved and are not alone," said the actress. "Only then will they not feel afraid of society or difficulties in life."

Soon after the trip, Zhang Ziyi will fly to Cannes, France, where she will be a judge in the short film section of the ongoing Cannes International Film Festival.

By jingo, they're mad!

Zhang Ziyi, the internationally famous actress, often draws flak from netizens for her roles that they believe offend Chinese sensibilities.

Zhang Ziyi is once again the focus of an Internet controversy.

She is said to "have offended Chinese sensibilities" by appearing in a kneeling position in her latest movie The Horsemen. I haven't seen the movie yet, but from publicity materials, Zhang seems to play the role of a killer named Kristen. It's not clear whether Kristen is even Chinese or ethnic Chinese. But I guess such details would not bother those intent on painting the Chinese actress as "a traitor to her own country".

In 2005, Zhang starred in another Hollywood production, Memoirs of a Geisha, in which she played a geisha who sleeps with a client, played by a Japanese actor. A lot of egos were bruised in China, which gathered enough momentum to have the movie banned in her motherland.

According to one Internet posting, Zhang's "sins" are numerous. In a Sino-South Korean co-production called Sophie's Revenge, which is now in post-production, Zhang complimented her co-star but he supposedly bad-mouthed China. By extension, Zhang has been found guilty as well.

In a series of publicity shots a few years ago, Zhang wore a gown that revealed the upper part of her back. The photos were plastered all over Tokyo, which some netizens reckoned "debased the Chinese race".

She also appeared in a shampoo commercial in Japan but turned down a similar product endorsement deal in China because "the money is too little". Very "unpatriotic", claimed some.

In 2007, she appeared on the cover of Brio, a Japanese magazine, looking buddy-buddy with a Japanese man. In 2006, she was featured on the cover of the Japanese edition of Playboy. Though alone, she obviously played to Japanese male fantasy.

What should these "seven deadly sins" get her? I will not quote the online suggestions. Suffice it to say, it's not pretty. Sometimes I have the feeling that Zhang gets her hefty fees not for her performances, but for all the mud thrown at her. She is as quickly deemed here a symbol of a hundred years of Chinese humiliation as she is seen as the archetypal Chinese porcelain doll in Hollywood.

Why are Chinese youths -netizens are predominantly young - so easily affronted? Moreover, when they feel displeased, they purport to represent the whole Chinese nation, not just themselves. What gave them the power to make such a bombastic claim?

Tom Cruise to get "Lost for Words" with Zhang Ziyi

The stalled production of the Hollywood romantic comedy "Lost for Words" might get a jumpstart with the possible addition of Tom Cruise to the cast.

Universal Pictures, which is producing the film, reportedly invited the Hollywood star to step in as the lead to fill the vacancy left by British actor Hugh Grant, according to leading U.S. showbiz magazine "Variety."

Grant quit the project last October after a disagreement about the screenplay with Richard Curtis, his longtime partner in previous films and the producer of "Lost for Words." After Grant's departure, Zhang Ziyi, the lead actress in the film, returned to China to shoot another film.

According to media reports, Universal is currently contacting Tom Cruise on the contract.

"Lost for Words" is about a love triangle in which a Hollywood actor falls for his Chinese director after romancing her translator during their making of a film. Susanne Bier, the Danish filmmaker and former Oscar nominee, will direct the movie.

Berlinale says 'Happy Birthday' to Zhang Ziyi

The ongoing Berlin Film Festival welcomed the arrival of Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi on Monday with wishes for her 30th birthday.

Zhang arrived in Berlin on Monday, the day of her 30th birthday, and was invited to present awards at the festival's "Shooting Stars" program the same evening.

As the host welcomed Zhang onto the stage with "Happy Birthday", the audience gave the star warm applause.

Zhang told the audience in English that she was happy to get back to Berlin, where, nine years ago, her big-screen debut "The Road Home" won the Silver Bear award.

"Today I'm very happy to be here to encourage the new generation of actors," Zhang said before she handed out awards to this year's "Shooting Stars". Nine young European actors and actresses were honored with the award.

Zhang Ziyi was in Berlin to promote her new film "Forever Enthralled", the only Chinese-language competitor for the festival's top honor, the Golden Bear.

The 59th annual Berlin Film Festival runs until February 15.

Zhang Ziyi "enraged" by paparazzi photos

Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi has expressed her resentment over a series of paparazzi photos that show intimate scenes of her and her fiance.

"When she found out about the photos online, she was enraged," an assistant of Zhang surnamed Zhi told the Western China Metropolis Daily on Monday.

A group of 81 photos first emerged during the past weekend on the English-language Website X17online.com, and were spread like wildfire among Chinese Websites thereafter. Some sites even encountered server failure due to an overwhelming number of hits, according to a report on Sina.com.cn.

The photos show scantily-clad Zhang Ziyi and Vivi Nevo sunbathing on a beach. Zhang can be seen topless in several photos. The couple obviously were unaware of the paparazzi and were shown in the photos caressing each other. Sources say the beach was the private property of Zhang's millionaire fiance Nevo.

"It is a matter of personal privacy," Ji Lingling, Zhang's publicist, said in a statement. "Ziyi and her fiance were vacationing on a private beach enjoying a normal part of life," adding the photos were a serious infringement of the couple's privacy.

Ji says the actress is now working to have these photos removed from the Internet, but is yet to consider filing a lawsuit.

The Western China Metropolis Daily cites a Beijing lawyer named Wei Zhen as saying that Zhang could seek legal help to stop commercial Websites from using the photos to attract clicks

Zhang Ziyi engaged, says boyfriend

The engagement was not confirmed by the actress, who told the press in June that she had no plans for marriage.

Nevo was in China with Zhang Ziyi last year when she was filming for Chen Kaige's "Mei Lanfang," and he paid visits to Zhang's parents according to press reports.

British heart-throb Hugh Grant and "Memoirs of a Geisha" star Zhang Ziyi are to star in a romantic comedy set in the world of moviemaking, entertainment industry press reported Tuesday.

Bier's last film was drama "Things We Lost in the Fire" starring Halle Berry and Benicio Del Toro.
