Eva Mendes named Global Pleasure Ambassador

Eva Mendes has been named as a Global Pleasure Ambassador for an ice cream brand, according to Starpulse. The Hollywood actress was chosen by Magnum ice cream to work with Professor of Pleasure, who is doing a study “on the causes of happiness.”

She says, "I'm really happy to be Magnum's Pleasure Ambassador because I am a huge chocolate fan. And I'm also a big pleasure seeker and believe in guiltless pleasure. If you're going to do it then just enjoy every second of it, life's too short!"

Mendes is also set to host a Pleasure Summit in Europe next month.

Chinese after-party for Oscar champion

"I hope this is a universal story that connects nations," says Danny Boyle, director of Slumdog Millionaire when he was in Beijing on Tuesday to promote the film.

Having swept the 81st Academy Awards with eight wins including that of the Best Picture and Best Director, the film hits Chinese mainland theaters today.

Boyle is optimistic about the film's reception in China, a country often compared with India in terms of its locations, population and speedy economic development.

"China and India both have huge populations," he said. "In both countries there is a huge mass of ordinary people, who will find that the character's life story could be theirs, too. Everybody's life story is worth something - that's one of the reasons this film works all over the world."

Boyle was delighted about the film's success in South Africa, where it debuted in the same week as The Watchman. It was only shown in half as many screens as the blockbuster but took twice as much money.

As one of 20 foreign films annually screened on the Chinese mainland, the rags-to-riches tale will hit some 2,000 theaters across the country.

"The film shows a concern for the grass roots, is inspirational and has a special artistic beauty," said Weng Li, a spokesman for China Film Group, which handles the importing of foreign films to Daily Variety. Weng also revealed CFG is considering importing more Oscar films to China this year.

Slumdog Millionaire premiered in Hong Kong on Feb 26 and raked in HK$1 million ($128,899), dwarfing previous first-day takings there by Oscar winners like Million Dollar Baby (HK$138,863) in 2005 and Crash (HK$114,922) in 2006.

It has generated widespread controversy in India, however. Some people criticized Boyle for depicting their country as poor, dirty and backward, while others cheered its revelation of the country's true nature.

Boyle laughed off the issue: "It is democracy," he said. "India has a billion people. They disagree with everything all the time, and they are so full-on, never half-hearted. It is full of debate there and it's good debate."

The controversy, Boyle believes, stems to a large extent from India's own film industry.

"Bollywood tends to depict only near-childish fantastic pictures of the middle class - that tends to be Bollywood's big obsession," he said. "Some Bollywood people think films should not focus on slums, while others say that's exactly how Bollywood pictures would improve, by actually catering to more ordinary people."

Boyle, who denied he was being lined up to direct the next Bond film, shares his views of Hollywood.

"Hollywood is business, just like Bollywood," he said. "It turns out hundreds of films and caters to different things. It does not really suit me.

"I like to take a limited amount of money and try to make it feel like 100 million dollars on the big screen. You can do that slightly better outside the Hollywood system. I call it working off the radar, so that nobody knows what you are doing."

If you were making Slumdog Millionaire in Hollywood, Boyle explained, its central character, Jamal, would never have been tortured at the start of the film and the kids would never have been blinded.

"They would say 'forget about that, people will leave the cinema if you show that scene'. And you would never have the song and dance at the end, because the tone changes too much. What they do is go for the middle ground - but it is things off the middle-ground that really interest me."

Nicole Richie's family fate

Nicole Richie will let fate decide how many children she has.

The 27-year-old star's boyfriend Joel Madden - who recently announced the couple are expecting their second child - is unsure how big their family will be because they don't have a baby making schedule.

He said: "We let love plan our babies. We said even before this one that we didn't know how many kids we were going to have - then we got pregnant!"

The Good Charlotte frontman - who has a 14-month-old daughter Harlow Winter with Nicole - says his mother was the first to suspect Nicole was pregnant again.

He told KIIS FM radio host Ryan Seacrest: "My mom called me and she's like, 'Is Nicole...?' Every time, I'm like, 'Mom, come on, seriously. I would tell you.' And then I swear, two weeks later it comes true. But we're excited about it. It's going to be great."

Joel has also revealed he finds it difficult leaving Nicole and their daughter behind when he tours with his band.

He explained: "That's hard man, when you leave your kids and they're saying no. I wrote a song for Harlow."

Mariah Carey gets ready for girl

Actress Mariah Carey arrives for the premiere of the film "Push" during the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah January 16, 2009.

Mariah Carey has reportedly been buying baby items.

The singer - who is said to have made an offer on a $125 million French Chatreau-style mansion in Los Angeles - has sparked rumours she is expecting a girl after splashing out $200,000 on items including a pink crib and highchair. She has also consulted an interior decorator for advice on styling a nursery.

A source said: "It's 45,000 sq ft and looks like a European castle. It's so big, it can't even be called a mansion - it's similar to Buckingham Palace! "

She has asked interior decorator Kenneth Bordewick to advise on her new home and has requested an all-pink nursery. It's going to be over the top!" Despite planning the baby room, Mariah - who married Nick Cannon in a secret ceremony last year - is not believed to be pregnant.

A source said: "Mariah has tossed around the idea of adopting."

The couple were seen leaving a Beverly Hills' Southern California Reproductive Center earlier this month, where they reportedly met with a prenatal specialist.

Mariah, 38, is said to be desperate to give birth before she turns 40 next March. However, Nick, 28, is not ready to rush into starting a family. He said recently: "We'll have kids soon. Like a couple of years soon."

Gossip girl's on-set style

Actress Taylor Momsen is pictured filming the upcoming episode of "Gossip Girl" in New York City on Wednesday afternoon, March 18.

"Gossip Girl" starlet Taylor Momsen was spotted out working on the filming set of the hit TV play in New York City on Wednesday afternoon (March 18). The 15-year-old, who plays Jenny Humphrey in the drama, sported a few different looks during her filming session.

Momsen revealed earlier that her new rock band The Reckless would be putting out their album this year and she would start touring with the band around April.

Miss Momsem is the lead vocal, songwriter and guitarist of the band.

"It's a huge passion and totally important to me," she told Teen Vogue, "It's really exciting and probably not what people are gonna expect. Kinda dark, a little bit heavier - but we have our lighter, fun stuff too."

Anne Hathaway to play Garland

Actress Anne Hathaway arrives at the premiere of the film "Valentino: The Last Emperor" in New York March 17, 2009.

Anne Hathaway will play Judy Garland in a new biopic.

The 26-year-old actress will portray the iconic performer in both the movie and stage adaptations of Gerald Clarke's biography 'Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland'.

Harvey Weinstein, of The Weinstein Company who secured the film and stage rights of the book, is delighted to have Anne on board.

He said: "We are thrilled to have the brilliantly talented Anne Hathaway portray stage and screen legend Judy Garland. I have worked with Anne on projects in the past and have known her for many years.

She will be a true class act in this challenging role. "Gerald Clarke's biography is a fascinating and comprehensive look at Garland's life and is particularly outstanding because of its exclusive details from her own writings.

Her story is incredible subject matter for both theatre and film and we look forward to bringing it to audiences." It is unclear whether the stage production or movie will be produced first.

Former child star Judy - the mother of actress Liza Minnelli - battled a string of addictions and attempted suicide several times.

The 'Wizard of Oz' star married five times and suffered financial problems throughout her career. Judy died of an accidental drugs overdose in 1969 at the age of 47.
